Research Integrity

We adhere to the best practices in the ethics of scholarly publishing stated in the COPE’s (Committee on Publication Ethics) Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for all parties involved: Authors, Reviewers and the Publisher. If you have questions or concerns regarding research integrity or publishing ethics in this journal, you may contact the editor.

Reviewing Policy

Passion is committed to reviewing papers fairly and impartially. We proceed in various stages. First, papers are initially evaluated by the Editor-in-Chief. Second, papers are evaluated by associate editors. Third, papers are sent for double blind peer review. Papers might be rejected during any stage of this process.

Book reviews, book symposia contributions and review essays are not subject to normal peer review. These are reviewed by an editor who can make a judgement on their own without sending the paper for peer review. They may also request additional guidance from other editors or peer reviewers to help inform their judgements if they judge that it is needed.

Special Issue Policy

Special issues are prepared following a special issue proposal from guest editors to the editors-in-chief who will accept or not after consulting with the associate editors.

All special issue papers are initially read by an editor-in-chief to check if they are suitable for the journal. If so, the papers are forwarded to the special issues editors who act as associate editors for the paper. The special issues editors then act in the same way as associate editors do for normal submissions: they find referees to review the papers and then make a decision on the basis of at least two referee reports.

When a guest editor submits to a special issue, their paper is handled by the editor-in-chief and an associate editor for the journal. If no conflict of interest is present and the issue is edited by multiple guest editors, another guest editor will serve as associate editor for this paper.

Editors-in-chief, associate editors and guest editors must all declare conflicts of interest. When these are declared, the relevant papers will be handled by other members of the editorial team.

Editorial introductions are not peer reviewed but are reviewed by an editor-in-chief.

Generative AI/ Large Language Models policy

Guidelines for authors

Passion seeks to publish papers about emotion written by beings capable of experiencing emotions. Since the view of the editors-in-chief is that generative AI tools are incapable of experiencing emotions, generative AI cannot be the author or co-author of an article for Passion. Passion will not consider articles that have been authored or co-authored using generative AI.

Papers that contain fictitious references will be considered as having committed a severe academic integrity violation and the editorial staff may take further action as a result.

As we do not accept papers (co-)authored by generative AI, this means that we will not consider articles that:

Copy text, tables, figures or images produced by generative AI and present them as the author’s own work. We consider this to be plagiarism.
Presents arguments or objections that have been produced by generative AI as the author’s own. While it may be acceptable to draw on such ideas these should always be credited to the generative AI system that produced them. As we value work that presents insights on emotion from being that experience them, papers that draw heavily on insights from generative AI are likely to deemed as less publishable than those that draw on the author’s own arguments.

Certain uses of generative AI may be allowed and will be considered on a case-by-case basis:

The use of generative AI to produce images, figures and tables that are clearly labelled as having been produced using generative AI and that have been carefully reviewed by the author for accuracy.

Certain uses of generative AI are acceptable but should be clearly indicated:

The use of generative AI to assist in finding additional relevant literature to read. This should not replace a human-conducted literature review
The use of generative AI to assist in copyediting a text. This should be clearly listed by the author in the acknowledgements section.

Guidelines for reviewers and editors

Submissions to Passion are confidential. As a result, neither (guest) editors nor reviewers should upload submissions to external servers such as generative AI tools. Those who agree to referee for Passion are agreeing to give their assessment of the submission, not the assessment of a generative AI tool. It is not appropriate for a reviewer or editor to base their evaluation even partially on the basis of the output of a generative AI system.

The only acceptable use of generative AI tools in the reviewing process is as assistance in copyediting a referee report. This use should be clearly indicated.

Publication Ethics and Malpractice (PEM) Statement

Passion is committed to promoting ethical publication practices. We therefore expect everybody involved in the publication process to uphold the standards of publication ethics set out by the Commission on Publication Ethics (COPE). Cases of ethical misconduct or malpractice will be dealt with according to the COPE guidelines and requirements. Ethical oversight applies equally to Authors, Reviewers and Editors.

Requirements for Authors

Only submit manuscripts that are original papers, your own work (or the work of your co-authors), have not been published before, and are not under consideration for publication elsewhere. This excludes duplicate or redundant publications (or self-plagiarism).
In case of co-authorship, make sure the manuscript is approved by all authors. If co-authorship is not equal, please specify the individual contributions of each co-author. All listed authors of the article should have made a significant contribution to the work.(The work of contributors other than identified as authors can be recognized in an Acknowledgement.)
Confirm that there are no known conflicts of interest (competing interests of financial or other nature) associated with the submission, which might affect your interpretation of results. If relevant, please state funding and support of the research in the submission.
Please make sure all data are accurate and are representative of your work.
Ensure that no participants were harmed, physically or mentally, during the research submitted for publication, and that the personal details of the participants were fully anonymized. This applies to both textual citations and images.
Please ensure that you have properly cited publications that have been influential in determining the research work and the reported results. When citing other people’s work, please make that clear with quotation marks, proper referencing to the work (author, year, page number). Plagiarism in all its forms constitutes serious unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable.
Check that all copyrighted material within the article has permission for publication. For instance, if you are using previously published figures and tables, make sure that you have already obtained the right to do so from the original copyright holder.
Please only use generative AI to assist in finding additional relevant literature to read or to copyedit your text. None of this should replace a human-conducted literature review, and any use of generative AI for these purposes should be clearly listed by the author in the acknowledgements section. In some cases, using generative AI to help produce figures, tables, and images may be acceptable, provided you or your co-author(s) have carefully reviewed them. You are encouraged to support data sharing and reproducibility, and thus, if possible, store your research data in a public repository and cite them accordingly.
Ensure that your manuscript has been read and corrected for clarity, grammar, and spelling.

Requirements for Reviewers

Reviewers hold the responsibility to be objective in their judgements.
They have no conflict of interest concerning the research, the authors, and/or the research funders.
They point out relevant published work which is not yet cited by the author(s), and evaluate whether the manuscript has already been published in another journal.
Apart from plagiarism detectors, reviewers may use AI tools when checking a manuscript’s originality or for checking language correctness of their own report, but the use of generative AI (GenAI) for writing a report and as a substitute for deep review is not permitted.
Reviewers treat the reviewed articles confidentially, and remain anonymous throughout the double-blind review process.

As a guest or associate editor for Passion, you hold full authority to reject/accept an article once it has been assigned to you by an editor-in-chief.

Do your utmost to remain objective in your evaluation and decision making.

The Editorial Team is committed to a strict policy against plagiarism and false data. To this purpose, as an editor, please check the originality of the manuscript using a plagiarism checker before starting the review process.

Post-Publication Discussions

Complaints and Appeals: Complaints can be raised by anyone and should be addressed to either one of the Editors-in-Chief.

Correction Notices: Whenever it is recognized that a published paper contains a significant inaccuracy, such as one of the following is needed: rearranging the authorship order, adding important information to the text, changing some data, or replacing an entry in the reference list, correction can be initiated by the author, by submitting a Correction notice.

Research Misconduct and Ethical Malpractice: Any cases of research misconduct (e.g., plagiarism, data falsification/fabrication, citation manipulation, etc.) are to be thoroughly investigated and publicly communicated. Suppose it turns out that an already published article was unsuitable for publication for some well-based ethical reason, the article will be retracted in an identifiable way to readers and indexing systems: by issuing a corrigendum or erratum and, in serious cases, by notifying other relevant institutions and the authorities as well.

Open Access Policy

This journal is an open access journal which means that all content is freely available without charge to users or their institutions. This journal does not charge article processing fees.

Archiving policy

To ensure permanency of all publications, this journal utilises Portico and the PKP Preservation Network to create permanent archives for the purposes of preservation and restoration.

Repository Policy

Authors are allowed and encouraged to deposit versions of their work in a repository of their choice.

Copyright and License

Authors retain copyright and full publishing rights without restrictions and grant the journal the right of first publication. Articles are published under the license Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0), which allows others to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or to use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author. When reused, the authorship of the work must be stated and reference made to the original publication in this journal.

Authors are encouraged to use their ORCID ID when submitting their manuscript.
